Starving for new experiences

In a restaurant there are several basic customer needs that they need to accomplish. These can be serving delicious food, having fast and precise service, fullfilling the hygiene rules, having a pleasant environment, flexible menu, etc. If a restaurant can’t satisfy these needs than the gustes won’t return. However, as I said these are just the basic needs. So, if a restaurant satisfies all these needs that doesn’t mean that it will run without demand problems.

Nowadays, people want something interesting, that brings new experiences into their life. They do not seek to eat in a usual and boring restaurant. So, below I mention some ideas how to turn your restaurant into the most exciting place ever.

It was hard to chose from the all the good ideas, that can easily be found on the internet. Nevertheless, I decided not to write about the best ideas, rather I would like to mention the most interesting and unusual ones.

Dark restaurant: It is about to eat in complete darkness. This concept is about to „lose” one of the senses, and be able to concentrate on the other ones more, like the taste and smell of the food.

In my opinion, this is not a good idea. In complete darkness most of the people would feel anxiety. Moreover, people like to see how their food looks like, because if it does not look good, than they may complain about it. Furthermore, I do not think that I would bring my family, friends or date partner to this restaurant, because that would be very strange to speak to someone, who I can’t see. Maybe if I want to try something unusual, than I would visit this restaurant alone. So, as I see the target segment of a restaurant like this is not too wide. However, there are existing restaurants with this concept, that are doing pretty well.

As I experienced, some of these new ideas are very extreme, like the Disaster café and the Dinner in the sky.

Dinner in the sky: This is a dinig table, that can go 150 feet up to the sky. It is for 22 person (+ 3 staff members) and it can stay up there for 8 hours.

My problem with this idea is, what if one of the customers wants to go back to the ground for something? As I see, than the staff members have to move the table down, with this movement interrupting the other 21 person’s meal. I undersand, that this group would be for example a family, that booked this table for an unusual, extreme lunch. However, everyone knows that fact, if someone tells you to sit in one seat for 2-8 hours, than you just can’t sit there.

Disaster café: This restaurant has 2 parts. The alien themed one for kids and the disaster themed which is under the ground. The disaster themed restaurant is more than, what it seems to be, because they are somehow making (not real) earthquakes. What makes it really interesting? That non of the guests know when will the next disaster strike.

As I see this is one of the better ideas. However, I would never visit this restaurant. My only problem with Disaster café is the spilled drinks and that the food can land on the floor after one of these unexpected earthquakes and I do not want to pay for food that I may not eat. According to an article, which is related, the plates are heavier than the normal ones, but the meals still usually land on the floor.

Do-It-Yourself Dining: An other interesting concept is the DIY Dining trend. The restaurant provides all the ingredients and the chefs, who are helping the customers to cook delicious meals.

In my opinion, people go out to a restaurant to rest a bit, and to get ready meal, that is made by experienced cooks. However, it is a great entertainment and opportunity for learning how to prepare tasty meals.

These new trends are pretty good and interesting, but as you can see, there is at least one bigger problem with each one. That’s because as I said before these are new ideas, after a while the inventors will improve and correct the shortcomings, that are mentioned above.
